Kia Ora, Harae Mai, I'm really happy to share with you our 7 night Explorer Package adventure around Fiordland. This incredible package is full of excitement and adventure and if our famous Fiordland weather plays a part, this package is flexible to be able to move days about dependant on the conditions.
Day One: A Taste of Fiordland:
After a hearty breakfast at the lodge you will be collected by your private guide for a morning of exploring Te Anau and the surrounding region. We call it our 'Welcome to Fiordland Day' where we will firstly sit down and relax with you - no doubt with a Kiwi flat white in hand! and go over your 6 days of amazing adventures. The best intoduction to Fiordland is next and not to be missed, with a visit to our local cinema for a 32 minute viewing of Ata Whenua – Shadowland which brings the Fiordland World Heritage Status wilderness you would otherwise never see. Mysterious, evocative, exhilarating and utterly spectacular, filmed mostly from a helicopter across extremes of season, climate and terrain, it will take you on an unforgettable journey through one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes on earth and give you a deep understading of how big the Fiordland National Park really is!
After this, its time to lace up the boots and head on an adventure as you will experience Lake Manapouri and the Fiordland National Park, with a fun-filled afternoon of jet boating and hiking. You'll jet boat the mighty Waiau River to Lake Manapouri, and hike an easy section of the famous Kepler Track. Enjoy the grand landscapes Fiordland is famous for by water, and land in one unforgettable afternoon. This is an easy 6k walk to start of your week of adventures.
Day Two: Mighty Milford and the Routeburn Track
On waking up, enjoy another delicious breakfast before meeting up with your private guide and jumping in a vehicle to enjoy a memorable "unhurried" day excursion to Milford Sound. Described as the most scenic alpine drive in the world this is the best option into and out onto Milford sound ensuring you don't miss any of the amazing scenery. Includes a boat cruise onto Milford Sound which is a world famous tourist destination for a very good reason before you are off on an afternoon hike as we introduce you to the stunning Routeburn Track. With your guide and at your own pace discover this incredible alpine environment and on the trail you will hike against a dramatic backdrop of Fiordland’s vast mountains and valleys and discover the unique native plants and birds. Your knowledgeable guide will answer all your questions, while sharing the best views and hidden wonders.
Remember following each day’s activities, you’ll be back at Fiordland Lodge for a wander around the property and be able to soak in the Hot Tubs and ease the muscles no doubt enjoying a derserved local pinot noir or two....
Day Three: The Sanctuary
Following a hearty breakfast you will journey to a special Fiordland people rarely get to see and truly connect with nature. This place is one of our favourite places to go, true escapism and you will feel as though you’re stepping back in time to an untouched wilderness. You’ll have the opportunity to hand-feed native eels, spot numerous mountain-bred rainbow and brown trout and spend time exploring and soaking up this special place.
You start with a private boat charter on scenic Lake Te Anau, then come ashore for a short hike through lush beech forests to Lake Hankinson, a small glacial lake that ‘time forgot’. Venture further into Fiordland on a second boat and enjoy the mesmerising views of the surrounding landscape (and catch some fish if you want to), before reaching Hankinson Hut, one of the oldest backcountry huts in Fiordland National Park.
Enjoy a gourmet platter lunch in the hut before the best way to end your day: a scenic helicopter flight. On the return helicopter trip, you’ll love flying over the Takahe Wilderness area, seeing unique rock formations and taking in an aerial view of the vastness of Fiordland.
Landing straight onto the Fiordland Lodge lawn at 4pm or so...all in good time for a Hot Tub and pre dinner cocktails.
Day Four: Customised Fiordland Day
Today is your Day to do whatever you want, nothing is planned, nothing is booked, a day for you to experience a day in Fiordland however you wish. Hike off the beaten path on one of the lesser know tracks around Fiordland or just spend the day exploring the different environments in the area. We can help you choose the best option for you based on your interests, whether it be bird watching, alpine plants, farming and botany, photography or walking in the natural landscape. We are here to help but please note that no activity has been priced into today so whatever you decide to do excursion wise will be additional to the package price.
Day Five: Doubtful and Dusky Helicopter Flight and Kepler Heli Hike
Today is going to be quite the day provided the weather gods are on our side!.
With yet another fantastic Fiordland sleep under the belt and another hearty breakfast, at 9am you’re going to listen out for the sweet sound of your private Fiordland helicopter that will land on the lawn and whisk you into the unknown! Today you will visit the southern part of the South Island’s wild West Coast and experience the many scattered islands and early history unique to New Zealand’s largest fiord, Dusky Sound. Your return journey will take you to the head of Doubtful Sound, through the hidden valley of Campbell’s Kingdom and back down the South Arm of Lake Te Anau where you will be dropped off at Mt Luxmore the first stop on the Kepler Track and the start of your next adventure.
Landing in the alpine area, you will explore the expansive alpine tussock fields, a botanists' delight with all the unique plant life! Panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, lake and National Park make an incredible backdrop for your Kepler experience. With your knowledgeable nature guide, learn about the fauna and flora in the surrounding alpine tussock fields, and enjoy the panoramic views of the Te Anau basin, scenic lakes and surrounding Fiordland Mountains. Here we enjoy a true wilderness tea break. After time exploring the alpine area and for those that chose to, walking to the summit of Mount Luxmore, we begin our guided walk on a well-formed section of the Kepler Track.
Descending through magnificent mountain and silver beech forest the effects of different altitude and weather conditions experienced in Fiordland are clear to see, as the trees and undergrowth quickly change, creating a varied backdrop for your hike. Half way is marked as we pass under magnificent, towering limestone bluffs allowing the guide to share the geology of Fiordland along with dramatic visual examples. The approach to Lake Te Anau is evident by the track meandering through native New Zealand ferns and other sub-tropical species.
The guided walk is finished at the sandy beach of Brod Bay, the pick up point for the boat cruise back to Te Anau township. The boat ride offers an enjoyable way to complete this very beautiful guided walk on the Kepler Track, offering a great viewing of the path you took, from alpine area to the clear water of Lake Te Anau.
This is an down hill walk (8km) on a wide track, requiring a medium level of fitness. There are plenty of stops for photographs, bird-watching and interpretation along the way to break the descent. You’ll be back at the lodge anytime late-afternoon but the longer out there, the better!
